PB&J in the Morning

peanut butter and jellyI woke up this morning and my very first thought was that I’d kill for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Luckily, the supplies were on hand and so no husbands were harmed in the obtaining of said sandwich.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches remind me of a lot of things– how my best female friend doesn’t like them, and my best male friend doesn’t understand my American obsession with them, and how a song about PB&J is the closest thing to a “song” that Dave and I have.  It’s by a local artist named Danny Maika who has performed at a few of my birthday parties, and always amazes me with his charm and talent.   It’s not Danny’s favorite song, but it’s one I fell in love with when I heard it at an open mic, and it’s one I fell in love to since I was on a date with Dave. It loses something when it’s not live, or professionally recorded, but I hope you enjoy it still!

If you’re in the area, check out one of his shows: http://www.dannymaika.com/shows.php

  2. As a kid, I didn’t like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at all (I just didn’t get it). As an adult, I simply love to get them when we’re on the road. The best PBJ I ever had was from a little deli in Olema, California, (no kidding) just outside Point Reyes National Seashore. All organic and soooo yummy!

    • Oh that sounds delicious! Plus, it sounds like it was part of a great memory. :)

I didn’t like jelly as a kid either, actually… I’d eat peanut butter and honey, or bananas, but never jelly. Then one day, I just changed my mind. :)

  3. Great post…have you had a fluffernutter? This was standard fare where I grew up, but midwestern people look at me askance. The other family fav is PB and grandma’s bread-and-butter pickles. Yum!!!

    • I’ve never had flutternutter or PB&Pickles, but I know enough about the deliciousness of nut butter to not judge before trying it. Some of the most surprising combinations have won me over! :)

  4. Fun post and I really like that song as well! My daughter’s favorite song used to be Macaroni and Cheese by Bill Harley – not as adult friendly and made me worry that she was not going to get over her obsession with that particular food. She switches it up with PB & J, which is a standby food for the adults in the house as well.

    • :) Thank you! It’s a fun little original song… he has a few that I love, but that was the one that won me over. I loved mac & cheese, but the low-carb versions I’ve tried have been mediocre at best… and I don’t think my body could handle the carbs in a normal batch nowadays. So hurrah for PB&J as a standby! :D

    • Haha! My siblings love that song, but I prefer Danny’s version, just because it doesn’t keep me up in the middle of the night, haha! :D

  5. funny that you write about this today – I was just smiling inwardly to myself this morning, driving to work after yoga class, eating my PBJ. I was thinking about how my PBJ sandwiches have become more like a PBJ pillow with a delicious thick payload of PB and apricot preserves in the middle…what a way to start the day!!!

  6. Never woke up wanting on but I do enjoy them once in a while. They must be on soft while bread which I usually do not get very much. I eat a lot of peanut butter wrapped in a flour tortilla. which I grew up eating at neighbors,

  7. I LOVE pbj. LOVE. I esp love Trader Joes unsalted crunchy peanut butter but I can’t eat it anymore, I haven’t had any in 8 months and thanks to you and that pic, I’m jonesin hard for some. The first thing I thought of when I woke up was that I needed to make an appt for some botox. Truth.
Nommed you for an award but ya gotta read my new post.

    • Why can’t you have anymore? And botox?! Please, you’re lovely! I didn’t get your new post sent to my email! That was rude of the WP robots. I’m heading over to check it out, thanks for the heads up! :)

      • Well that’s just weird about the post! WP is being bitchy! I can’t have peanut butter cos I have a little gall bladder cyst (TMI) and peanut butter and cheese cause problemos cos of all the fat. Not really too bad, cos I lost a bit of weight, ha ha, but thanks re botox, but I get it all the time and proud of it. I’d look like that really wrinkly dog, a Sharpei, without it. (My post title for Monday!) You’d agree if you saw me close up! Yeah, I’m just an old dinosaur.

        • Your reply went to spam, how weird is that! … Now I have all these questions about botox, does it hurt, how long does it last, etc. :D Cheese and peanutbutter are two of my favorite foods. I’m googling right now to make sure I do what I can to avoid gall bladder cysts!

          • I can tell you all you want to know about gall bladders and botox! Once you have a gall bladder “attack” you’ll know why they call it “attack”. It’s a horrible pain in the upper right side (called upper right quadrant) to the right and under your rib area. The pain goes all the way to the back and I swear, it was worse than labor. I’m much much much older than you and I think it happens to older women(yuck) but if you eat a lot of fried foods, that can trigger GB problems cos the GB and liver and pancreas all work together to process fats and sugars and toxins. But I don’t ever eat fried foods, esp when you consider I’m totally compulsive about my weight and I’m a veg. So…after I had an ultrasound and they found a teensy cyst, the doc and I talked about eliminating ALL fats and anything that triggered that pain, so I cut out pnut butter :( , cheese, chocolate, and alcohol, (although its not fat, it made me very sick, too). And tons of wasted calories there! Since I did that, I haven’t had a problem. (Told you I knew a lot. I was premed but I’m a quitter!)
Now– botox is wonderful. It’s only sposed to last about 3 months, but it really lasts much much longer. The real benefit to getting it done when you’re younger is that it works to PREVENT wrinkles, truly. Pretty soon I’m going to need much more than botox but I’m gonna wait as long as I can for the more invasive stuff. I’m gonna do a botox post prolly for Monday when I go and get some!
Did I bore you? If you ever have questions about medical stuff, I’m known as the unofficial doctor in my ‘hood, please email me at urjentbiz@gmail.com. I’m here to help!
Best magic supplement ever? Wheat grass. Even my doc is a huge fan.

            • Awesome!!! I’m glad you cut out the foods that made you sick. It sounds so obvious, but most people we know aren’t willing or able to do that. I’m trying to cut down on fatty foods myself… I’ve been on a low/no-sugar diet for years now, but part of my method to making it easy on me was by allowing myself to eat anything else, fatty or not. The weight stays off because sugar is the biggest culprit of that, but I don’t want to have heart problems either… or apparently gall bladder attacks! I’m fascinated by botox now. Must research! :) Thanks for all the info!!

  8. Nice. The song is awesome. The melody reminds me of windy Sunday afternoon in my childhood where we’re forced to sleep and songs like this plays on the radio, lulling me to sleep. And great morning. I would definitely try that famous peanut butter jelly sandwich. :3

Have a great day! Rawr! :P

    • Rawr! :) Thanks for reading! That’s exactly the sort of feeling I get whenever I listen to any of Danny’s music… lulled and happy, and a little sleepy. Plus, a little silly. :) I’m glad you enjoyed it too! :)

  9. Some good bread, soft, thick slices. Some chunky peanut butter slathered on both sides. Some strawberry jellied sandwiched in the middle. Voila = you have delcious. :-D I probably eat one of these a week. The wife (though she uses apricot jelly instead of strawberry) probably is having one every other day at this point – lots of protein, and it’s a conveneint little snack.

    • I’ve completely converted to creamy peanut butter! No idea why it happened, but one day I woke up and just wanted the creamy kind instead. I eat ‘em as much as your life, for much the same reason. Not to feed a baby, of course, but because my diet is fairly limited on protein and it’s a nice pick me up that I can do low-carb style. :) Yay for PB&J’s!

  10. I have been having cravings for peanut butter & banana sandwiches lately. I still love PB & J, but I actually like PB & marmalade on toast better. Have you tried it?

    • I just saw a beautiful tin of cocoa flavored as PB & Banana, with a picture of Elvis, of course. :) My british friend recommended marmalade once, but I just didn’t like it as much as jam. :)

  11. Until now I still love PB&J sandwiches and the cute photo you posted just made me grin from ear to ear. Love the song as well, this is the first time I hear it, thanks for sharing :)

    • :D Ha! Glad you liked the picture. :) The song is an original by the musician who lives out here, so that’s probably why you haven’t heard it before, but it’s great, right?! :) Thanks for reading!

  12. I’m afraid I don’t like peanut butter, and the thought of putting it together with jam just seems wrong. Though not as wrong as it sounded before I found out that “jelly” is American for “jam”. Jelly in the UK is a gelatin-based dessert often served with ice cream, so you can imagine my horror at hearing of “peanut butter and jelly” together :-)
For me it’s toast with Marmite every time.
Love the picture, though – very cute!

    • :D That’s exactly why my best friend doesn’t like it… he’s British. We say Jello instead of Jelly out here… and then jelly is a pureed type of jam, and jam is a chunkier version. I can’t do marmite… :-/ it scares me, haha! Can’t go wrong with plain ‘ol toast, though! :D

      • Just for info’s sake: Jelly in North America is made from the juice of the fruit which is why it is clear while jam is made from the whole fruit. Jello is the stuff the Brits call jelly.

  14. Peanut Butter and Jelly is an important American comfort, and it makes me sad my non-American friends don’t understand. Sometimes, you just need a PB&J with a tall glass of milk.
